For children, visits to the dentist may be frightening at first, but it doesn’t have to be! By becoming familiar with the dentist at a young age it can help children to gain comfort early on rather than to be scared in a dental chair. Specifically, scheduling appointments with pediatric dentists, who specialize in young children and adolescents are especially skilled in making children feel more comfortable at the dental office.

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, a child’s first dental visit should take place within six months after a baby’s first tooth appears, but no later than a child’s first birthday. During this initial dental visit, the dentist will most likely educate the parents on proper gum and tooth care for babies and use this visit as an opportunity to build a relationship with both the child and parents. At the end of the appointment, time should be allotted for parents and children to ask any questions with the dentist.

Following the first few dental appointments, your child should feel a bit more at ease with the dentist. By this time, dental cleanings should begin to occur. As a matter of fact, cleanings are just as important as visiting with the dentist for any dental exams. During a cleaning, the dental hygienist will clean the teeth by removing any plaque or tartar and will properly floss and polish the teeth. By receiving cleanings regularly, this decreases the possible risk of tooth decay or periodontal disease. For best practice, it is recommended that you visit the dentist every six months for a routine dental cleaning and exam. However, more frequent visits may be needed on a case-by-case basis.
