According to the American Dental Association, we should brush our teeth for at least two minutes. As an adult, this may not seem like a big deal. However, for a child, two minutes can feel like a lifetime.
The good news is that there are a variety of creative ways you can get your kids to brush their teeth for two minutes. Here at Little Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, we recommend these tips:
Set a Timer
Consider overturning an egg timer with colorful sand and challenging your child too keep brushing until the sand has made its way to the bottom. You can also purchase a special toothbrush for your child that blinks or plays music for two minutes.
Play Your Child’s Favorite Song
There’s an awesome free app available called Brush DJ. Brush DJ can play tunes from your library for two minutes. It also allows you to set reminders to help your child brush, floss, and visit the dentist.
All children love rewards. Consider creating a rewards chart and telling your child that every time they brush their teeth for two minutes, they’ll be able to place a sticker on the chart. Once the chart is full of stickers, they’ll receive a reward like movie night or the chance to stay up a little later one night.
Choose the Right Toothbrush and Toothpaste
Children’s toothbrushes come in bright colors and fun designs. Invest in an exciting toothbrush that you know your child will love as well as a toothpaste with a flavor they’ll enjoy. By doing so, you’ll motivate them to brush for two minutes.
