With the plethora of toothbrushes out on the market today, it may be difficult to figure out what kind of toothbrush is best for your child to use. There are different sizes and shape depending on needs and ability so finding the right toothbrush is essential. In fact, finding the right toothbrush for your child is more than just a toothbrush; it is an instrument that will form healthy oral habits that should last an entire lifetime.
Birth to 2 Years Old
As babies, teeth are not so plentiful during this time in life. Before teeth erupt, clean your baby’s mouth and gums with a soft cloth or infant toothbrush once a day. By doing so, this helps to prepare your baby for future teeth cleaning.
At the age of two is when toddlers are likely to want to help with their own brushing routine. Toddler’s toothbrushes have small heads and large handles with grips that make it easy for small children to hold. At this age, children are not capable of brushing on their own but it can be fun for them to take a turn with the help of a parent. This helps to give your young toddler a chance at practicing healthy oral habits and become acclimated with proper brushing.
Toothbrushes: Ages 5+
Typically, children, ages five to eight will use toothbrushes that have slimmer handles. The slimmer handle helps them maneuver the toothbrush easier throughout the mouth during brushing. Kids brushes at this age are usually colorful in appearance or may even have a favorite cartoon character to add excitement to brushing.
Once your child reaches the ages of nine, many adult teeth are present. At this time, an adult toothbrush can be used for brushing. Any soft-bristled toothbrush (either manual or electric) should be used two times daily for two minutes.
