Many parents wonder when they should take their baby to the pediatric dentist. At Little Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, we suggest that parents take their babies to the dentist after their first tooth appears but no later than their first birthday. After their first dental visit, they should return every six months or so.

It may seem strange to take a baby to the dentist but keep in mind that as soon as your baby develops teeth, they are susceptible to cavities. By being proactive about your baby’s dental health at a young age, you can help keep your child’s teeth and gums healthy for years to come.

Although your baby may not understand what a dentist is or why it is important for them to seek dental care, there are several ways you can prepare them. Show them how to open their mouth so that they know what to do when it’s time for the dentist to check their teeth. You can also read books about dental visits to help your child get excited and get rid of any fear they may feel.

To ensure an efficient and enjoyable dental visit, avoid scheduling your child’s dental appointment during naptime. Be sure to select a time that your child is typically well-rested and able to cooperate. It’s also a good idea to feed your child so that they aren’t hungry during their appointment. Once you are at the dentist with your child, work with the dentist to calm your child down if they start to get fussy or anxious.
