Night Guards in Ashburn

What Are Night Guards?

Night guards are small but mighty protectors for your child’s smile. Worn while sleeping, these custom-made devices help prevent the damage caused by nighttime teeth grinding and clenching—a condition known as bruxism. Without protection, bruxism can lead to worn-down teeth, jaw pain, headaches, and even disrupted sleep. A night guard acts like a soft cushion between the teeth, reducing pressure on the jaw and keeping enamel safe from wear and tear.

At Little Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Jonathon Konz creates custom night guards designed specifically for growing mouths—comfortable, durable, and easy to wear. Because when kids sleep well and smile confidently, everyone wins.

What to Expect

Consultation & Examination

Every smile is different, and so is every treatment plan. Dr. Konz will begin with a gentle and thorough exam to check for signs of bruxism—such as flattened teeth, jaw soreness, or complaints of headaches. He’ll also talk with you and your child about sleep habits or any signs of stress that may be contributing to the grinding. If a night guard is recommended, we’ll walk you through what to expect.

Custom Fitting

Next, we’ll take a quick impression of your child’s teeth (or use digital scans if applicable) to create a night guard that’s just the right size and shape for their smile. Unlike over-the-counter options, our custom night guards are designed for growing jaws and sensitive mouths—so they stay in place and feel comfortable all night long.

Follow-Up & Adjustments

Once the guard is ready, we’ll have you come in for a fitting to make sure everything feels just right. Dr. Konz will check the fit and make any adjustments needed. As your child grows, their night guard may need to be updated—so we’ll keep a close eye on their progress and oral health at regular checkups.

Why Night Guards Matter

Protect Developing Teeth

Kids only get one set of adult teeth—so protecting them early is key! Night guards help prevent chipping, enamel wear, and other damage caused by grinding.

Ease Jaw Pain & Headaches

Children who grind their teeth may wake up with sore jaws or headaches. A night guard reduces pressure on the jaw muscles, helping them feel better (and less cranky) in the morning.

Sleep Better, Feel Better

Grinding can disturb your child’s sleep—without them even realizing it. By keeping the jaw relaxed and teeth separated, night guards support a more peaceful night’s rest.
