No matter the age, teeth pain is an unpleasant experience for anyone. However, as parents, it can be especially hard to watch our toddler suffer from teeth pain. It may be even more difficult to understand how to deal with their teeth pain or what can be done to subside any teeth pain.

Common Causes:

Typically, teething is a largely associated with teeth pain. If your toddler is specifically experiencing front teeth pain, it could be a result of teething. Although, depending on the age of your toddler, many of the baby teeth have already erupted in the mouth. However, some of the front teeth may not erupt until around 13-22 month range, which is heavily dependent upon genetics so do not be alarmed if the front teeth are erupting at an earlier or later age.

Additionally, an injury to the front teeth could cause a severe pain for your toddler as well. Whether they were playing outside or in the house and trauma was caused during play to a front tooth, it would be beneficial to immediate call a pediatric dentist who offers emergency care. It is understandable that accidents happen and receiving a full evaluation from a pediatric dentist would be beneficial to properly assess your child’s pain and teeth.

If the tooth is chipped, or appears broken, try to collect the broken pieces of the tooth and bring them in a bag with you to the dental office. In order to help alleviate any pain in the meantime following the incident, place an ice pack on the outer surface of the cheek where the tooth pain seems to be coming from.

Pain Relief

Pain whether caused by teething or an injury can be managed. Medications can help to reduce inflammation or discomfort for your toddler. If your child does not have an allergy and is used to receiving a liquid or chewable ibuprofen or acetaminophen, this could help them to lessen the severity of their tooth pain.
