Here at Little Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, we have heard many parents ask us how young is too young for braces. Keep reading to learn more about the ideal age for your child to begin orthodontic care.
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, parents should bring their children in for an initial orthodontic evaluation at age 7. However, this does not mean that all children should begin treatment at age 7.
By age 7, your child should have a completely grown in back bite and a dentist or orthodontist should be able to assess the front to back and side to side relationships of your child’s teeth. This will allow them to pinpoint current orthodontic issues and any problem they may develop in the future.
In some cases, orthodontic treatment will be started right away at age 7. However, in other situations, it’ll be best to wait. If your child has jaw issues such as an underbite, early treatment may prevent their teeth from shifting. In the event they have crowded teeth, early treatment may realign them and prevent them from permanently settling in the incorrect position. Often, the earlier treatment is begun, the less time it will take to resolve a child’s issues.
Since every child is different, we highly encourage you bring your child in to our office for an evaluation once they turn 7.
